Sandy Masuo
THE ROCK FILES
The first piece of writing for which I was paid was a review of Camper Van Beethoven's Key Lime Pie album. It ran in the Boston Phoenix in 1989. For the next 15 years, I threw myself into music journalism. Although I was an avid music fan, I was mainly driven by the fact that people would give me money to write. And write I did. I was a staff editor for the Musician's Guide to Touring and Promotion, Option Magazine, and Request Magazine. I was a columnist for the Boston Phoenix, a contributor to the Los Angeles Times, and over the years contributed to a library of music magazines that are mostly gone or now live on the internet: Rip, Smug, Reflex, MUSICIAN, Guitar, Alternative Press, Raygun, Huh, Bikini, B-Side, The Album Network, and even Rolling Stone. I also contributed to many websites that are lost in the ether: Blender, E! Online, VirginMega, Musician.com, Guitar.com, and several others that escape my memory. I wish I had printed out more of the online stories, but almost all my interview transcripts are intact, along with miscellaneous press materials. My policy as an interviewer was to keep conversing until the subject left the room or was dragged away by their publicist. Many of these transcripts are very long and quite amusing. I hope to find a home for them in a library archive somewhere.
